Sheryl Chavez has
been named the KASSW 2008 School Social Worker of the Year. Sheryl is
employed as a school social worker at Lansing Middle School, 509 West Ida,
Lansing, KS 66043. Ms. Chavez was selected from among several worthy
candidates during the KASSW Annual Membership Meeting held in conjunction of
the Summer Institute in Topeka
Sheryl graduated from
the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Social Work in 1983, and a
Master of Social Work in 1991. As a component of her education, Sheryl
completed internships with Lawrence Social and Rehabilitation Services
(1980-81), Intensive Counseling Services, Shawnee Mission, KS (Summer 1989),
and Olathe School District Special Education Services
(1991-92)
Since 2002, Sheryl
has held her current position with Lansing Middle School. Her current
position allows her to collaborate with teachers, parents, students, and
other professionals on issues such as academic performance, learning
disabilities, peer relationships, behavior, and personal issues such as
divorce or grief. Sheryl organizes and coordinates a school wide character
education and Bully Prevention activities. She serves as a member of the
assessment team, and provides counseling services to individual students or
small groups.
